Stay at lakeside taupo Motel and Celebrate Winter in Taupo
Taupo is one of New Zealand's best year-round destinations.
Summer is ideal for enjoying the lake itself and making the most of some of the fantastic walking tracks and hikes in the area.
But winter brings a host of equally exciting activities - both in the great outdoor environments and inside, warm and cozy.
While the weather can be brisk, it is still lovely. Temperatures from June to August range from frosty lows to highs of around 14-15 degrees celsius. The great thing is that the weather is not overly wet. During the winter months, on average we see 10 or 11 days of rainfall. That means there are plenty of crisp, sunshiny days to enjoy the incredible scenery and activities both indoor and out that Great Lake Taupo has to offer.
With fantastic skiing nearby, geothermal hot pools to warm your bones in, and a wide array of cafes, restaurants, and indoor activities to choose from, Taupo is your ideal winter break destination.
Let’s look at a few of the great ways you can celebrate winter in Taupo with your favourite Taupo activities!
Taupo Activities To Enjoy In Winter
Attend Mid-Winter Christmas At Executive Motel Taupo - Saturday 22 June
We love winter in Taupo, and what better time than to celebrate a “White Christmas” than when it’s the shortest day of the year; cold out and cozy warm inside. Join us for our mid-winter Christmas celebration, with our tranquil lakefront location PLUS -your choice of a complimentary aromatic and warming mulled wine, or a wee port, and not forgetting the tree, the music and Christmas cake, of course!
Play In The Snow At Mount Ruapehu
For those keen to hit the slopes, the ski fields of Mount Ruapehu are only an hour and 15 minutes’ drive away. You can hire gear from Taupo or directly on the mountain.
These are New Zealand’s largest ski-fields, and the area has the longest skiing season of anywhere in Australasia.
From the Whakapapa Ski Area with more than 65 trails to suit any ability, to the more advanced slopes at Turoa, you are spoiled for choice. Happy Valley at Whakapapa is ideal for beginners and those with small children.
If you don’t have your own transport, shuttles are available from town in Taupo.
Soak In A Hot Pool… Or Two Or Three
There’s something super soothing about being immersed in steaming hot water as the cold air nips at your exposed head!
For pure relaxation- revitalise the mind, body and soul, head to Wairakei Terraces with its series of outdoor rockpools of different temperatures dotted with small waterfalls. Here, you can treat those already warmed-up muscles to a range of massages. This is the ideal spot for couples (only adults over 14 years allowed)
DeBrett’s Thermal Park is another favourite. Massages are on offer, plus there are areas for meals and caters well for family events.
Lastly, the AC Baths is a public facility in town with both indoor and outdoor heated pools and hydro slides. It is not so great if you just want peace and quiet, but great for families and will warm you up regardless!
Get Amongst It At The Taupo Winter Festival
A must-do winter Taupo activity is the Taupo Winter Festival! This fantastic event has been running for the last few years and is jam-packed with things to do. Held over ten days in July (4th to 14th this year), there are 32 events to suit any taste, and half of them are free.
With an ice rink and giant inflatable snow globe, a drive-in movie hub, film festival, comedy and music events and so much more, you will need a holiday to recover from the excitement of your holiday!
Hit The Great Outdoors
Just because it is a bit chilly, it doesn’t mean you have to stay inside. If skiing or snowboarding is not your thing then there are lots of other options in Taupo. Adventuring is very popular with skydiving, bungy jumping, jet boating, white water rafting, and quad biking all on the cards.
There are lots of amazing sites to see. Huka Falls is particularly majestic after a storm! You can take a guided tour of our beautiful city with Go Explore NZ, or get out and explore it yourself. There are plenty of trails to hike or bike with the Western side of the Lake giving you a totally new experience. You can also stay in Taupo and shuttle to the Tongariro Crossing for the ultimate outdoor adventure.
Most of Taupo’s activities and popular attractions can be enjoyed whatever the weather. So schedule in Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids, the Great Lake Walkway, the Taupo Bungy, a scenic flight, fishing, or whatever floats your boat! And for when you just want to hide away inside, there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, bars, wineries and breweries to keep you fed and watered. (and your hosts at Executive Motel Taupo will tell you about local off the beaten track places to bathe or just enjoy)
